Comet 17P/Holmes

Photographed by Andrew Elliott.

Single shot with Canon 300D at prime focus of Meade 16" LX200 SCT

The nucleus is the lower left most "star" within the coma, the other two are just background stars. Note the comet's green outer halo seen in this image, thought to be due to fluorescing C2 and CN molecules.

Snow-bearing anvil cloud, with Jupiter above-left

Photographed by Andrew Elliott.

The cloud is illuminated solely by the lights of Liverpool, which is completely below the horizon from the photographer's location. The cloud is reflected in the marsh which was just past being flooded by the Ribble at the time of the near-equinoctial new moon. Canon 300D, approx 8 sec exposure, zoom at 18mm. Slightly brightened in Paint Shop Pro.
